The month of travel comes first
In our readings of 22 August 2026, a foot passenger in a reclining seat pays, on Marseille–Ajaccio, an average of €62.71 in August 2026, against €35.82 in January 2027. Marseille–Bastia follows the same slope, from €83.37 on average in August 2026 to €55.37 in January 2027.
Toulon–Ajaccio looks nothing like that. Its cheapest month is not January 2027 but November 2026 (from €30.60, €33.64 on average), its dearest is August 2026 (€45.72 on average), and the swing is markedly tighter. The cheapest ticket across our three routes is found there, among departures still ahead: €28.20 on 28 October 2026, with Corsica Ferries. Picking your month is decisive out of Marseille; out of Toulon, the lever is real but narrower.
With a car and a cabin, the stakes change scale: two adults, two children and a car on Marseille–Bastia reach €497.87 on average in August 2026, against €239.47 in January 2027.
The day of the week: a few euros, not a multiple
On Marseille–Ajaccio, Tuesday comes out at €37.67 on average for the foot passenger, against €42.92 on Friday. Marseille–Bastia has its trough on Wednesday (€56.72) and its peak on Saturday (€66.04). On Toulon–Ajaccio, everything plays out between Wednesday (€37.63) and Saturday (€40.86). The day refines the bill; it never replaces the right month.
Should you book early? What four weeks of readings show
This is where our readings say something generic advice does not. The figures in this section come from a closed study, run over a fixed window: they no longer move, and that is deliberate.
Comparing, for every crossing tracked between 13 June and 11 July 2026, its first and its last recorded price, three cases emerge: 43.8% did not move, 38.9% fell, 17.3% rose. On average, the gap between first and last observation is −€7.70.
Both directions exist, with real amplitudes. Upwards: the Marseille–Ajaccio crossing of 30 August 2026 went from €79.78 to €100.78 for a foot passenger; Toulon–Bastia on 9 August 2026, from €68.00 to €84.00. On the way down: Porto-Vecchio–Marseille on 24 September 2026, recorded at €82.62 at the start of the window, was showing €38.62 on 11 July 2026 with La Méridionale; Ajaccio–Marseille on 3 October 2026 went from €81.95 to €38.95, again with La Méridionale, over the same window. On the foot-passenger reclining-seat profile alone, out of Marseille and Toulon, crossings lost more than €5 between two readings, down to −€32.00.
These figures describe a four-week window, not a general law: that is precisely why we repeat the reading regularly. What they already allow us to say: a displayed price is neither a guaranteed floor nor a ceiling, and the rule "book as early as possible" does not hold systematically in our observations.
