Taking the ferry to Corsica: what it really changes

Prices observed, dated, never estimated.

In Bastia, the ramp comes down straight onto the quay, and the car you loaded three days earlier rolls off toward the maquis with the bikes on the roof, the cooler full and the pushchair in the boot. At Ajaccio airport, the same traveller collects a rental key, signs a contract, and discovers the fuel-return policy and the mileage cap. Two ways to reach the same island, two logics of travel.

The ferry is rarely chosen for a single reason. It brings three together: the practical, you take your life with you and not just yourself; the economic, you rent nothing on arrival; the ecological, fewer emissions per passenger than the plane. The third calls for a nuance few pages own up to: the ferry's climate advantage is real, but it depends on how you travel — on foot or in a full car, in a seat or a cabin, by day or by night — as much as on the mode itself. Here are the three reasons, backed by third-party figures, and their limits.

Take your life with you, not just yourself

The ferry carries what a plane refuses. The boot stays loaded from departure to arrival: bikes, boards, diving gear, tents, coolers, pushchairs, bags that blow past the luggage allowance. Nothing to weigh, nothing to dismantle, nothing to ship ahead. A family away for two weeks brings its rolling home; a cyclist loads a bike with no bag and no surcharge.

Arriving with your own car then changes the whole stay. Corsica is a place you drive: the mountain roads, the beaches of the south, the villages of the Cap can't be reached by public transport, whose network stays limited off the main routes. Without a car on the island, you rent one — or you give up on half of Corsica.

Then there's the crossing itself. Five to twelve hours depending on the line, often overnight. It isn't lost time: you board in the evening, you sleep through the crossing, you disembark in the morning rested, with no driving and no jet lag. The journey becomes part of the trip instead of coming before it.

What the ferry allows and the plane forbids

The calculation people forget to do

On paper, a ferry ticket with a car looks expensive next to a bare flight. The comparison often stops there, wrongly. The flight forces a cost the ferry removes: renting a car once you arrive. In high season, that line weighs heavily. The average rental price in Corsica in August is around €68 a day, roughly €476 for a week (combien-coute.net, 2026) — an order of magnitude, with the yearly range running from €24 to €134 a day depending on the season and how early you book.

For a stay of a week or more with the family, bringing your own car can therefore work out cheaper on the total budget, once the rental is avoided. The reasoning flips for a solo traveller, on foot, on a short trip: there, a bare flight with no car may win out. The right calculation adds up the transport and whatever you have to rent, book or replace once you arrive.

Ferry versus plane: what the figures really say

The most-quoted figure comes from the European Environment Agency: about 60 g of CO₂ per passenger-kilometre for a ferry, against nearly three times more for the plane (relayed by Vert.eco, 2024-2026, and ekwateur.fr, 2025). The order of magnitude favours the boat, but it should be handled with care: the NGO Transport & Environment calls this estimate approximate, and there is, to date, no up-to-date official French emission factor for the ferry — the values in ADEME's Empreinte database are archived or missing (bonpote.com, 2026; empreinte-baroudeuse.fr, 2026).

You also have to agree on the kilometre, because the distances themselves diverge across sources. Toulon–Ajaccio covers 183 nautical miles, about 339 km (Corsica Ferries, Direct Ferries). Marseille–Ajaccio measures about 170-173 miles (315-320 km) as the crow flies, but 249 miles (461 km) along the commercial route actually followed (Allo Ferry). Nice–Bastia runs around 108-114 miles (200-210 km), Sète–Bastia around 253-256 miles (470-475 km) as a great-circle distance (auvergne-mobilite.fr, 2026). An emission figure "per kilometre" multiplied by the wrong distance gives a false total — hence the reliance on orders of magnitude.

Other, more transparent methods exist. Bon Pote's open-source ferry calculator lays out its assumptions: cabin or seat, whether there's a car, speed, load factor (bonpote.com, 2026). The futur.eco and greenferries models compute the footprint by volume, ship by ship, from the Thetis/EIV data (2026). They converge on one point: the mode alone can't settle it — how you travel decides.

The DEFRA factors, relayed by Direct Ferries (directferries.fr), show it clearly. A foot passenger on a ferry emits 0.0187 kg of CO₂e per kilometre, against 0.1535 kg for a short-haul flight: about 88% less. But the same source gives 0.1879 kg for a petrol car and 0.0525 kg for an electric one — the car on board counts as much as the crossing. An independent calculation on Nice–Ajaccio (empreinte-baroudeuse.fr, 2026) puts, as an order of magnitude, a crossing in a cabin at around 200 kg of CO₂ against about 28 kg for a flight on an ATR 72. An order of magnitude, not an absolute truth — but it illustrates a reversal: a solo cabin can approach, even exceed, the plane.

How to travel by ferry the lean way

The gap comes down to a few concrete choices.

What the companies are doing

The carriers serving Corsica have begun their transition, at a documented pace. At the quay, electrification (the CENAQ scheme, "zero-smoke port calls") lets ships cut their engines and plug into the grid at Marseille and Sète, removing emissions and noise while stationary (company sources, AtmoSud and Région Sud, 2026). Corsica Linea claims six plug-in-ready ships by mid-2026 and a 20% drop in its CO₂ emissions per mile compared with 2022.

On the fuel side, liquefied natural gas (LNG) powers recent ships such as the A Galeotta (2023) and the Capu Rossu (2025-2026): about 20 to 25% less CO₂, 85 to 95% fewer nitrogen oxides and nearly 99% less sulphur than heavy fuel oil (Corsica Linea and press: gomet.net, 2023; mesinfos.fr, 2023; corsenetinfos.corsica, 2026). The nuance is clear: LNG remains a fossil fuel — it cuts emissions without eliminating them. A bio-LNG trial on Bastia–Marseille was aiming in 2026 for a drop of about 80% (Corse Net Infos, 2026). La Méridionale is waiting for 2027 on two LNG-electric hybrid ships announced at −50% CO₂ against the Piana (gaz-mobilite.fr, 2025).

The framework pushes in that direction. Corsica Linea is targeting −40% CO₂ by 2030 and neutrality by 2040, and the Mediterranean has been classified as a SECA zone since May 2025, with a lowered sulphur cap (gomet.net).

So, ferry or plane for you?

No mode wins outright; the right choice depends on the profile.

The rest comes down to the dates and the port of departure. That's where price, for its part, gets measured — month by month, line by line.

Methodology. Two kinds of figures live side by side on In Tempu. The prices are our own readings, dated, from the companies' official sites: they point to the dedicated pages, and none are quoted here. The emissions and distance data come from third-party sources, cited with their year; these are orders of magnitude, not measurements. There is to date no up-to-date official ADEME factor for the ferry; the available estimates diverge by method (seat or cabin, car, speed, load factor) and by whether the distance is measured as the crow flies or along the real route. We own that uncertainty rather than settling on a single figure.
